Solomon

(Continued from David)

As far as Jewish kings go, Solomon may be the 2nd-most well known, after his father David.  One might almost expect a Hollywood film about him to be title "Son Of David".  (In fact, the film I did see was SOLOMON AND SHEBA, with Yul Brynner and one of my favorite baddies, George Sanders, as his political rival.)

The story of "Solomon" has been covered 6 times in the BOYS' LIFE series.  It was done in the most detail in the 4th version (1982) by artist Frank Bolle, but a crucial episode (and a half) was cut for the 5th version (1992).  After that, it only surfaced as a single episode from Anthony Castrillo (in 2005).

The 2 versions by Frank Bolle are so similar (and brief), I'm going to alternate between each episode for easy comparison.

Note that "The Queen of Sheba" episode was SKIPPED in 1992!
That's just not right.

August 1982  /  art by FRANK BOLLE
Note that the 1992 version cuts out the part of the text describing Solomon having "700 wives".  It's inescapable to me that someone in the 90's was trying to "clean up" The Bible.

As a bonus, here's "Judgement Of Solomon" by GUSTAVE DORE.
