Easter

(Continued from The Parables Of Jesus)

Which brings me to... the FINAL section of the BOYS' LIFE Bible series.

They really didn't go in much for the New Testament, and mostly, only in the early days.  So when it came to Jesus, they covered his birth, stories HE told, and his death (and ressurection).

I see the story of "Easter" has been covered in BOYS' LIFE 5 times, from 1953 to 1959.  That means the last time it was touched on was 54 years ago.

As the magazine itself did multiple times, when they got to the "end" of a run, they started over at "The Beginning"...

I'm proud to have put this blog together!  Here's the wrap-up...

The Parables Of Jesus

(Continued from The Nativity)

This section is unusual for the BOYS' LIFE series in that, whether one considers The Bible to be a historical account or mere fiction, these stories are actual FICTION, within the context of the stories being related.

They appear sporadically from June 1953 (less than a year after the series started) to December 1965.

The Nativity

(Continued from The Maccabees)

Without a doubt, one of the most well-known stories from The Bible is
"The Nativity"-- the story of the birth of Jesus.  Of course, this only goes for Christian Bibles, not Jewish ones (so, Old Testament, not New Testament).  This may explain why, while so little has been featured in the BOYS' LIFE series from the New Testament, this story was featured 8 times, starting all the way back in December 1953 (just a little over a year after the series began).  Although, not since 1964--  49 years ago.  (I'm sure Christmas was more than dealt with in the rest of the magazine.)

Please note that the 1955 version is rather...  "unusual". In addtion, I'm also including a bonus from 1959, the story "All Through The Night", as well as a bonus from 1967, "The Origin Of XMAS".

I believe the 1953 version of this was the only genuine Bible story
in BOYS' LIFE that was 2 full pages long!

The Maccabees

(Continued from Nehemiah)

I remember way back, perhaps in the 60's, having a large hardbound book which was an "illustrated" version of THE BIBLE.  Not too much different from some of the parts of the BOYS' LIFE series, it was entirely in black & white, with a limited amount of text and an emphasis on lavish illustrations.  It told the stories of both the Old Testament and the New Testament, in chronological order.

I bring this up because, out of that entire book, the one story I always remember having the hardest time comprehending was "The Maccabees".  It's the FINAL story of the Old Testament, and it involves another revolt against an outside oppressor-- a successful one this time.  Apparently taking place quite a lot of years after the story of "Nehemiah", but also quite a few years before the Roman occupation.  It seems like the country of Israel could never cut any breaks.

Though not referred to by that name, the BOYS' LIFE series did cover "Hanukkah" 5 times in its run-- 4 of them relatively early-on, starting with December 1953-- just 15 months after the series began.

Considering the mostly-Jewish slant of the BL series, it's surprising that "Hanukkah" hasn't been covered more often-- and not at all in the last 37 years.

This is really a case where I highly reccomend clicking on the link to the related Wikipedia page at the bottom.  I feel this particular story isn't one that can easily be "gotten" without some reading and concentration.

Nehemiah

(Continued from Esther)

Yet another obscure part of The Bible, the story of "Nehemiah" was covered in the BOYS' LIFE series exactly ONCE, and not until February 2009, more than 56 years since the series began!

It seems a shame that, after it took so long for the series to cover "Ezra" and "Nehemiah", that they couldn't have managed to have "Esther" in between.  Well, I've taken care of that here!

While "Ezra" details the return of some of the Jews from Babylon, in both "Esther" and "Nehemiah" it's clear that many of them were still there. And also, that the rebuilding of the country would be a long, slow process.

Esther

(Continued from Ezra)

The only slightly less-obscure story of "Esther" was skipped over in 2009 by Graeme Hewitson, who jumped straight from "Ezra" ("The Exiles Return") to "Nehemiah" (UP NEXT!).  This was no doubt because it was the last thing artist Anthony Castrillo did before being replaced by Hewitson.  Naturally, I'm presenting it here, IN SEQUENCE.

"Esther" has been covered in the BOYS' LIFE series only 3 times in its entire run, starting all the way back in May 1956, which makes it surprising it hasn't been done more often since then-- and not once in the proper sequence!

Between this and the story of "Deborah" (only covered TWICE), there would seem to be an anti-female vibe underlying the BL series.

Ezra

(Continued from Daniel)

Another obscure, yet pivotal episode, the story of "Ezra"-- or, as it was called
in the BOYS' LIFE series the one-and-only time it was covered (so far),
"The Exiles Return", details the Hebrews' return from Babylonian exile
and the rebuilding of The Temple.

It took until December 2008 for this to appear in the magazine,
more than 56 years since the series began!

Daniel, Part 2

(Continued from Part 1)

As he has with so many other stories, artist Frank Bolle covered the story of "Daniel" TWICE during his 20+ year run on the BOYS' LIFE series.  While he took 6 installments to do it in 1984, when he redid it again in 1994, 2 of the earlier episodes got SKIPPED.  I interpret this as someone in the 1990's trying to "clean up" (read: CENSOR) the BIBLE series, by leaving out some of the more "controversial" or "downbeat" episodes.

As before, I'll present Bolle's pairs of episodes back-to-back for easy comparison.

VERSIONS 4 & 5
Note that the 1st episode, "Nebuchadnezzar Destroys Jerusalem" was SKIPPED in 1994.  I've included it on the previous page
